The Difference Between Skincare and Cosmetics: Understanding the Basics of Facial Cleansing
The question of whether all cosmetic products must be removed using a cleanser often causes confusion among users. This misunderstanding may affect daily skincare practices and has implications for hygiene as well as religious observance.
Fundamentally, it is important to distinguish between skincare and cosmetics. Skincare products refer to non-coloured formulations such as cleansers, toners, serums, facial creams, and eye creams. From a formulation perspective, most skincare products are classified as oil-in-water systems, where oil droplets are dispersed in water, making them relatively easy to rinse off with water.
In contrast, cosmetics generally consist of coloured products used for facial makeup, including foundation, powder, blusher, lipstick, and eye makeup. Although sunscreen may appear colourless or white, it is categorised as a cosmetic due to its highly complex formulation, the use of multiple active ingredients, and the fact that many of its components are not water-soluble.
From a formulation science standpoint, most cosmetic products fall under water-in-oil systems, where water droplets are enclosed within an oil phase. As a result, these products require the use of a cleanser or makeup remover for effective removal from the skin.
For instance, if a person applies only skincare products such as a serum before sleep, rinsing with water alone is generally sufficient prior to performing ablution. However, when cosmetics such as foundation, powder, cushion, sunscreen, or lipstick are used, cleansing with a proper cleanser becomes necessary due to the presence of colorants, which are viscous and strongly adhere to the skin.
Failure to thoroughly remove cosmetic products may not only compromise skin hygiene but may also raise concerns from a religious perspective if product residues prevent water from directly contacting the skin during ablution.
Therefore, users are advised to be cautious of misleading claims regarding cosmetic cleansing requirements. Proper understanding is essential, as it affects both skin health and the integrity of religious practices.Credit : Prof. Dr. Siti Hamidah
